Modelling hyphal networks

چکیده
The indeterminate growth habit of fungal mycelial can produce massive organisms spanning kilometres, whereas the hypha, the modular building block of these structures, is only a fewmicrons in diameter. The qualitative and quantitative relationship between these scales is difficult to establishusing experimentalmethods alone anda largenumber ofmathematical models have been constructed to assist in the investigation of themulti-scale form and function of filamentous fungi. Many suchmodels operate at the colony-scale, representing the hyphal network as either a regular lattice or as a geometrically-unconstrained structure that changes according to aminimal set of specified rules focussed on the fundamental processes responsible for growth and function. In this reviewwediscuss thehistorical development and recent applications of such models and suggest some future directions. a 2012 The British Mycological Society. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Mathematical modelling of fungal growth and function
This contribution is based on the six presentations given at the Special Interest Group meeting on Mathematical modelling of fungal growth and function held during IMC9. The topics covered aspects of fungal growth ranging across several orders of magnitude of spatial and temporal scales from the bio-mechanics of spore ejection, vesicle trafficking and hyphal tip growth to the form and function ...
متن کاملRainfall-runoff modelling using artificial neural networks (ANNs): modelling and understanding
In recent years, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have become one of the most promising tools in order to model complex hydrological processes such as the rainfall-runoff process. In many studies, ANNs have demonstrated superior results compared to alternative methods. ANNs are able to map underlying relationship between input and output data without prior understanding of the process under in...
متن کاملMonthly runoff forecasting by means of artificial neural networks (ANNs)
Over the last decade or so, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have become one of the most promising tools formodelling hydrological processes such as rainfall runoff processes. However, the employment of a single model doesnot seem to be an appropriate approach for modelling such a complex, nonlinear, and discontinuous process thatvaries in space and time. For this reason, this study aims at de...
متن کاملEfficient Parameters Selection for CNTFET Modelling Using Artificial Neural Networks
In this article different types of artificial neural networks (ANN) were used for CNTFET (carbon nanotube transistors) simulation. CNTFET is one of the most likely alternatives to silicon transistors due to its excellent electronic properties. In determining the accurate output drain current of CNTFET, time lapsed and accuracy of different simulation methods were compared. The training data for...
متن کاملModelling the effect of environmental factors on the hyphal growth of the basidiomycete Physisporinus vitreus.
The present work investigated the effects of environmental factors on the growth of fungal colonies of the white-rot basidiomycetes Physisporinus vitreus using a lattice-free discrete modeling approach called the fungal growth model (FGM), in which hyphae and nutrients are considered as discrete structures. A discrete modeling approach enables the underlying mechanistic rule concerning the basi...
